Kaunas University of Technology (KTU)
Two organizations from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) with special tasks are involved in the project: (i) KTU Department of Food Science and Technology (KTU DFST) and (ii) KTU Food Institute (KTU FI).
KTU with its Department of Food Science and Technology (KTU-DFST) is the only one in Lithuania to train food technology specialists at all levels of university education and performs scientific research in food industries. Food Science covers from raw materials to finished food products. The Food Institute (KTU-FI) consists of sensory, microbiology, chemistry and technology laboratories, and Food Research Center (LST EN ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, scope: physical chemical and microbiological research of food products).
The ERA-NET SusFood2 collaboration will extend the perspectives of Lithuanian researchers in the development of new functional food products. The intended project contribution in the development of the field of science is complex, because research is focused on the bioconversion of industrial waste to value added products. This sustainable approach enables to unite the efforts of KTU and the food production companies in Lithuania by implementing new, environmentally friendly technologies.

University of Milan (UNIMI)
The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (DISFARM) of Milan University, created in 2012, promotes the coordination of interdisciplinary research lines in the framework of pharmaceutical sciences. The most important topics concerns the design, synthesis, development and control of new biologically active molecules, new pharmaceutical forms, dietary foods, biocides and of medical devices. In particular, the research activity of the Food Chemistry Group is mainly focused on the development of innovative functional foods and food supplements for the prevention of chronic and other diseases. The development of analytical and molecular methods to investigate the beneficial properties of phytochemicals, vegetable proteins and peptides are the central core of Food Chemistry research group.
DISFARM’s scientific activities are financially supported by Italian and European grants and are also assisted by collaborations with public institutions and national/international companies. With the purpose of training young researchers, the Department hosts the PhD course in “Pharmaceutical Sciences”, as well as the specialization school in “Hospital Pharmacy”, an interuniversity master and five post-graduate programs.
DISFARM is enrolled in QuESTIO (Quality Evaluation in Science and Technology for Innovation Opportunity) an initiative coordinated by Regione Lombardia mapping research services, technology transfer, and support for innovation.
